Abram blinked his eyes as he woke up alone. He extended his arm and patted around on the blanket beside his body. As he sat up, his cold skin missed Maddie’s warmth, and he couldn’t see far with such little light. He squinted, turning his head left and then right.

He remembered the noise he’d heard back in the cave, and his stomach dropped. Adrenaline pressed him to action. He felt around until he found the flashlight. While picking it up, he clicked the switch. Once he was on his feet, he turned in a full circle, surveying the area. He didn’t see Maddie, but he found his clothes. As far as he could tell, Maddie’s clothes were still there too. As he gathered his things, he noticed his gun and holster, wrapped up in his jeans. He dressed quickly. Where’s my girl?

He took a couple of steps in the direction of the cabin and stopped. Maybe natured called. Should I give her a minute? “Maddie?” When she didn’t answer, he called her name a few more times before circling the cabin. Oh, my God. Where is she? He rushed to the front door. The floorboard of the porch creaked as he turned the doorknob and entered. “Maddie?”

A quick shine of light produced no sign of her. Abram’s stomach tightened as if it were a rope full of sailor’s knots. He turned and exited the building, shutting the door behind him. Just as he was about to stomp down the stairs, he lifted the flashlight and illuminated the stretch of land where he’d been camping.

As he caught sight of the mountain lion just a few feet away from him, his jaw dropped and his blood pressure soared. He checked the animals face and then glanced down at its paws. He didn’t see any obvious signs up blood, but until he found Maddie unharmed, this beast was his enemy. Slowly, he moved his free hand down to his holster. The cat looked right at him, opened its jaws and made a sound more akin to chirping than the roaring or snarling he would have expected.

Abram’s heart pounded, and sweat damped his skin as the cat walked toward him. Shit! I might really have to shoot this damn cougar. He drew his gun but before he could aim, the cat stopped in its tracks. Seriously? It knows?

The mountain lion sat down and then slowly rolled over on its back, showing its belly while lifting its paws. Abram’s eyes widened and he lowered his weapon. The air around the animal seemed to move differently and then the clicking and popping noises started. A sickening sensation churned around in his stomach as his heart sunk. Bile inched up his throat as he watched the big cat’s paws transform into hands and feet. He shivered as the animal’s fur gave way to smooth skin, swallowing down his revulsion as Maddie emerged.

She stood up, naked and beautiful. Abram stilled, staring at her. He hadn’t seen another person shift since he was a little kid, and he barely had any memory of it.
